Library Card Sign-Up Month

September is "National Library Card Sign-Up" month, and at Sturgis Library we are planning our 2nd annual library card sign-up event on Sept. 14 from 3:30 - 6:00. We promote it at the schools to get children (and parents) to come tour the library and register. We have a 'get to know the library' scavenger hunt, refreshments, and give special treats to those who register for their library cards. This year, we are also revealing the library's new patron cards, and our special guest will be the artist who designed the cards. Last year we issued 27 new cards and had a great time meeting new families.

At these unique and fun story hours, children play and learn through stories and movement.

From the Wiggly Warm-Up to the Story Theater to the Critter Cool-Down, children are moving their bodies while learning poetry, Spanish, healthy eating habits, peace and character education, and nature education.

Fall 2010/Spring 2011 Stories

December -February - The Magic Pear Tree - a story from china about non-greed and giving.
March - May - The Treasure in the Earth - a story from Greece about respecting the earth.

Programs are appropriate for pre-school story times and K-5 classrooms.

Book theft

I have a topic I am interested in - book theft.

Without a security system how do you prevent people from walking out with your books?

I am thinking about banning book bags.

The worst thefts have been the school yearbooks. Without putting them behind locked doors & making the individuals check them out to look at them at a table in front of me, I don't know how to protect them.

Any ideas?

Membership dues!

Membership in the West River Rural Libraries group requires a monthly payment of at least one blog entry to keep the communication going.  You can feel free to blog about anything you like.  If you want to join the group, send me a note to add you to our blogger list.  My e-mail is hillcitylibrary@hillcitysd.org.

Welcome!

Today Black Hills Rural Librarians voted to change the name of our informal organization to the West River Rural Libraries.  We hope this will encompass and serve the needs of more of our western South Dakota small town libraries and librarians.  We look forward to your involvement and participation in this blog and in our quarterly meetings.  Our purpose is to share information, communicate, and collaborate between libraries in rural areas serving populations of less than 25,000 people.  Join us or contact any one of the members blogging for more information on our group!
